2014 Connecticut

Lakeville, Connecticut

MAY 2ND - 4TH, 2014

The Blessed Marriage Project hosted their first Energize Couples Retreat in Lakeville, Connecticut at the gorgeous Interlaken Inn. Twenty five married couples attended of all different ages and stages. From couples married for just one year to more than 35 years, and everything in-between. Based on the overwhelming positive responses from the participants, the retreat was a great success.

Here’s what some of the participants had to say in response to the question, “What did you enjoy most about the retreat?”

The retreat was so AMAZING! Too many high points to list. It was one the best organized, detail orientated, fun events that I have been to in a long, long, long, long time that had the UC imprint on it.
The atmosphere of support and of working together on issues that others experience beside ourselves makes it possible (safe) to go places that are otherwise dangerous or difficult. The common experience will allow us to face issues more confidently with less fear in the weeks/months ahead.
Relaxing environment. Lots of young couples, old friends. Spent quality time with my wife. All the lectures and break-outs were significant to me.
I was able to dig more deeply into issues with my wife about different viewpoints and attitudes regarding sexuality. The presentation on “Hot Monogamy” was great. There is so much reluctance and embarrassment among our members to talk about these things and I hope it will prompt more people to be more open – like Father was.
The presentations are excellent. Staff are organized. I enjoyed seeing 2nd gen blessed couples involved in improving blessed marriages.
I enjoyed the opportunity to spend relaxed, quality ‘sexy time’ with my wife. I enjoyed the opportunity to be with younger blessed couples (peers of my children) at this retreat and to reconnect with brothers and sisters and make new friends – I have missed this in recent years.

During the retreat participants received fun, informative and interactive presentations on Basics of a Strong Marriage, Handling Disagreements, Talking Effectively, Friendship & Fun, and Lovemaking. Participants also engaged in many different couples exercises throughout the retreat, which gave them a chance to practice using the skills and tools being taught with their spouse. In addition to the presentations, participants also had the opportunity to participate in two breakout sessions. Participants could choose from: Discovering and harmonizing different faith styles; Dealing with deeper emotional/spiritual issues negatively impacting your marriage; Learning each other’s love languages; The power of one spouse to improve the relationship; and, How to nourish the sexual relationship.

On Saturday afternoon the couples had several hours to relax and enjoy each other’s company while taking advantage of the amenities of the resort--upscale guestrooms, a beautiful scenic lakeside view, game room, volleyball and basketball courts and more. In the evening couples got dressed up and danced the night away, played games and took silly photos.

At the close of the retreat $1447.00 was collected in donations from energized couples that wanted to give back! These donations will make it possible for couples to attend future Energize Couples Retreats that might otherwise not be able to. There were also 14 couples interested in becoming Energize Marriage Enrichment Local Leaders. These local leaders will facilitate marriage enrichment small groups and day or half day seminars for other married couples in their local community. During the retreat they received some initial guidance and training for their new role, and will continue to receive training in the months to come.
